Understanding Halal Makeup

The term “halal” originates from Arabic meaning “permissible” or “lawful.” In the context of beauty products, halal signifies items that are free from ingredients prohibited under Islamic law, such as alcohol and certain animal-derived substances. Moreover, the production process must adhere to ethical standards, ensuring cleanliness and the absence of cross-contamination with non-halal elements.

Key Principles of Halal Cosmetics

  1. Prohibited Ingredients: Halal cosmetics must not contain haram (forbidden) substances, including alcohol and components derived from non-halal animals.
  2. Ethical Production: The manufacturing process should uphold Islamic principles, ensuring that products are produced in a manner that is ethical and hygienic.
  3. Cruelty-Free: Halal certification often encompasses a commitment to cruelty-free practices, prohibiting animal testing and ensuring that products are not harmful to consumers.

Why Choose Halal Beauty Products?

  • Ethical Assurance: Consumers are increasingly seeking products that align with their ethical values. Halal cosmetics provide assurance that the products are free from prohibited substances and are produced ethically.
  • Quality and Safety: Halal certification ensures that products are manufactured under strict hygiene and safety standards, offering consumers peace of mind regarding product quality.
  • Inclusivity: Halal beauty products cater not only to Muslim consumers but also to those seeking vegan, cruelty-free and ethically produced cosmetics.

Expect More Halal Beauty Brands on the Rise

The halal cosmetics market is experiencing substantial growth, driven by increasing demand for ethical and sustainable beauty products. Consumers are gravitating towards products that are cruelty-free, free from harmful chemicals and produced in environmentally responsible ways. Halal cosmetics naturally align with these values, as they are produced according to strict ethical guidelines that prohibit animal testing, harmful ingredients and unethical practices.

Halal beauty products represent a harmonious blend of ethical integrity and quality assurance. As the demand for conscious consumerism rises, these products offer a viable choice for those seeking beauty solutions that respect both personal beliefs and ethical standards.

  • The Inika foundation is the only one that doesn’t break me out been using it for a while. Will have to try the Claudia Nour lipbalm if I can get it here.

  • I’ve been to a few halal expos and it’s surprising how few of these makeup brands are represented. You’d think they’d take advantage of such a perfect platform. Missed opportunity.

    • Yes! It’s like these muslim event organisers don’t realise how big the demand is for halal beauty. They focus so much on food and fashion but barely any makeup brands. Hope they change that soon.

      • MISSABAYA has been to a few of these Muslim expos and you’re right. It would definitely be amazing to see some bigger halal beauty brands take advantage of these platforms and cater to the growing demand. Fingers crossed things change soon!

  • I love supporting halal brands but the price point is sometimes ridiculous. I get that they’re niche but really not all of us can afford £30 for a foundation.

    • The good news is that as more people continue to support halal brands, we should see prices become more competitive. With more demand hopefully, the prices will come down in time.

  • I have a few of these but honestly the lack of availability in the UK is frustrating. I always have to order online and wait ages for delivery. Wish more high street stores would stock halal makeup options.

    • The availability of halal makeup in the UK has definitely improved over the past few years. Just five years ago, it was a real challenge to find these products locally. Now, we’re seeing more and more brands and even high street stores offering options, which is a huge step forward. Even though some brands may not explicitly promote the word “halal,” the fact that we’re seeing more visibility, like hijab wearing models in ads, shows progress. While it’s still not perfect, we’re heading in the right direction and hopefully, it continues to get easier to access halal beauty products without long waits.

  • Great list but I feel like some brands just slap the ‘halal’ label on to attract more buyers. It’s so hard to know which ones are actually legit. Do you guys research ingredients or do you just go by the certification?

    • You’re absolutely right! Some brands can be a bit tricky with the ‘halal’ label and we’ve purposely left them out of this list. When it comes to finding legit products, we recommend checking out reviews and social media to get a better idea of the brand’s credibility. A lot of these companies have a solid background but it’s always best to do your own checks. If you’re ever unsure, don’t hesitate to email them directly with any questions 🙂
